Parishioners at St. Philip Catholic Church in Franklin got an early Christmas present from Bishop David Choby; the announcement that he has named Father Bala as the Parish’s new Pastor. In addition, Father Tien Tran, from South Vietnam has been named Associate Pastor.
In his announcement, the Bishop said:
My Dear People of St. Philip Parish:
This past Wednesday, I met with Father Bala, Father Tien Tran and the staff of the parish concerning the appointments of a new pastor and a new associate pastor. I expressed my gratitude to everyone for the generous service they continue to offer to you.
I also indicated to them that over the course of the past five weeks, I have had more than a few parishioners express their appreciation for the presence of Father Bala.
Given all of this, effective December 18, I have appointed Father Bala as the new pastor of St. Philip’s and Father Tien Tran as his associate. Father Tran will also serve one day a month as Chaplain to the Serra Club of Nashville.
Father Tran was ordained a priest this past spring. He returned to the seminary this fall to complete his Master’s Degree. I think that you’ll find him to be an active, loving and kind man. He has a good sense of humor too.
I am truly grateful for the support that these two priests will receive from the staff there at St. Philip’s and you, the parishioners.
While I was there, I also was very touched by the generous efforts on your part to make Christmas more joyful for those in the Franklin community who otherwise might not have a Christmas.
My best wishes for a Blessed Christmas for your and your loved ones.
Wishing you every blessing, I am.
Sincerely in Christ,
+Most Rev. David R. Choby
Bishop of Nashville
Father Bala has been serving as administrator since Father John Sappenfield left the parish in October.
An official welcoming party for Father Tran will be announced shortly.
