Liturgical Ministry

As a worshiping community we are ALL called to actively participate in our liturgies through song, prayer, silence, and ritual action. Service in one of the Liturgical ministries listed below is an excellent way to fulfill our baptismal call of service to one another. Whether participation is through “behind the scenes” preparation and planning, or through a public role of service within the Mass, parishioner contributions help our liturgies to be truly life-giving celebrations. Please prayerfully consider joining one of these ministries.

Altar Servers

Coordinator: Father Tran  615.550.2833

Altar Servers are members of the assembly who assist the priest during the Eucharist and other liturgical ceremonies so the liturgy can be conducted with grace and reverence. They ensure that all the requisites for the celebration are available at the appropriate time. Boys and girls aspiring to be servers must be rising 5th graders or older. They must be baptized and have received First Holy Communion. Candidates receive mandatory training; service is scheduled on a rotating basis.

Art & Environment

Coordinators: Diana Kaikaris 615.790.8275 and Jean McRedmond 615.370.2357

Utilizing sewing skills and creativity, this group takes care of the arts and environment for liturgical celebrations.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Coordinator: Mary Steverson . 931-388-4055

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist with the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass. In a deeper sense, these ministers are called from the community of those gathered to praise the Lord to “feed the Body of Christ to the Body of Christ.” Some ministers take communion to the sick in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, or at home; please see our Ministers of Care ministry for more information. Participation is open to fully initiated, practicing Catholics. Ministers are assigned to the Mass time of their choice. New and continuing ministers receive mandatory spiritual and practical training each fall and periodically throughout the year so they may fulfill their ministry with knowledge and reverence.

Hospitality Ministers

Coordinator: Frank Caruso. 615.794.3592

Ministers of hospitality (ushers) welcome parishioners and visitors to St. Philip at every Mass. They provide assistance in seating, collecting and taking up the gifts, directing the communion procession and handing out bulletins. They answer questions about the church (restroom locations, phones, lost and found), provide assistance in emergency situations, and help clean up the church for the next Mass. New and continuing ministers receive mandatory spiritual and practical training each fall and periodically throughout the year.

Lectors

Coordinator: Jeanne Drone  615.791.0028

Lectors proclaim the Word of the Lord to the assembly at Mass and other liturgies. If you have a love for God’s word, and the willingness to learn to proclaim it effectively, please consider volunteering for this ministry. Lectors are assigned to the Mass times of their choosing.  Candidates must be 11th grade or older. Mandatory training occurs in the fall for both new and continuing lectors with periodic refresher classes throughout the year.

Lector Resources:
